The Manor

A walauwa of history,
restored for quiet luxury

Maya Tangalle Luxury Manor began life as a 19th-century colonial walauwa — the Old Walawwa of Aranwella. Restored by celebrated architect Channa Daswatte, a protégé of Geoffrey Bawa, it blends historic character with contemporary interiors, and was selected for the MICHELIN Guide 2026 hotel collection.

Five individually styled suites gather around a 20-metre L-shaped swimming pool, within a 2-acre walled garden alive with birds and peacocks, overlooking working paddy fields. Take a suite, or take the whole manor as a staffed villa for a family or group.

We stayed at Maya Tangalle for three nights and honestly it was exceptional. The service was so good it felt like they secretly trained for the Olympics of hospitality. Everything was personal, thoughtful, and somehow always perfectly timed. The food was unreal. Easily the best Sri Lankan food I’ve had, the kind that makes you rethink every mediocre meal you’ve ever tolerated. Sampath and Prashath were hospitality personified. … And the property itself is just stunning. The kind of place that slows your brain down and reminds you what peace feels like. If I could bottle the vibe of Maya Tangalle, I would.

★★★★★

The hotel is situated near Tagelle in a stunning location outside a bustling town. It has its own walled estate with 2 acres of grounds, beautiful gardens and 50 acres of paddy fields which the local community farm and also benefit from. The 5 rooms are all individually styled and have large rooms and finished to an exceptional standard. There is a very large L shaped elegant swimming pool which is cleared often during the day. … The food was of exceptional quality. It was very fresh and presented to please the eye as well as the palate. They managed to adapt the menu so my husbands allergy to chilli and spices was easily catered for. The staff were brilliant. They were very attentive and nothing was too much trouble. They told us to treat it as their home.

Tranquil house with exceptional service. Staff are the best — sampath you looked after us so well. All the mango juice and food was excellent. Come here for relaxing experience. Additional tours of the area available. Nothing is too much trouble. Birds in the trees is all you hear with the peacocks.

A beautiful colonial-style gem — quiet, elegant, and perfectly maintained. Spacious rooms, delicious food, and exceptionally friendly service made our stay special. The personalized tours to temples, beaches, as well as turtle watching and Yoga with Hemanthe were fantastic. Thanks to Asoka, our great tour guide and the whole Maya team. If you visit Sri Lanka, this hotel is highly recommended.
