The Estate

A Plantation House Hidden in the Green

If you love nature and can live with the constant bird calls, the sudden rustling of leaves, the chirping of the cicadas and frogs, APA Villa Illuketia is the place to come to.

Set in lush acres of jungle, garden and paddy near Galle, Illuketia is a plantation-era mansion reimagined as an award-winning boutique retreat. Its founder, Hans Hoefer — publisher of the Insight Guides series covering over 120 countries — filled the house with original wooden temple doors, carved window frames and Oriental-style furniture, and opened Hans' Gallery of his own "Photoworks" (lithographic reproductions of Polaroid SX-70 film) from four decades of travel.

Days here move slowly: a swim in the pool hidden amongst tall trees, a walk through gardens and rice fields, dinner from the estate's own greenhouse, and nights scored by frogs and cicadas. Over 170 bird species have been spotted on the estate — many rare, some endemic — alongside monkeys, peacocks and a biodiverse community the property counts at 60+ amphibians and reptiles, 20 mammals and 556 plants.

Reviewers and travel writers have described Illuketia as a "200-year-old plantation house" — a house with two centuries of stories in its walls.

This is my second visit to this rare gem — my last one was 10 years ago and it remains the most enchanting stay I've ever had. … The food was equally amazing and the staff is just wonderful. 10/10!

It's quite simply Paradise. An authentic colonial style villa imaginatively reinvented with artistic flair. Antique & contemporary mixed with all modern amenities in an extraordinarily beautiful setting. The garden is so peaceful — and the pool enormous!

Most beautiful place I have ever stayed in. The house with few, lovingly furnished rooms is located in a huge, natural park with monkeys and hundreds of birds. Instead of one night I spent three nights here and only because I had to get my flight.

Really, really nice and lovingly maintained facility. … The breakfast/lunch/dinner was always delicious … The staff are extremely accommodating. I don't want to leave at all. Really a dream!
